BuitenGewoon
Liza Van Brakel
Buitengewoon is an exceptional circus project in which professional artists and actors with intellectual disabilities share the stage.
Buitengewoon is an exceptional circus project where the focus is not on adaptation, but on collaborative creation. Three circus artists and three actors with disabilities share the stage and express themselves through disciplines such as the Cyr wheel, ball walking, and juggling. Their own dreams, ideas, and curiosity serve as the starting point for the acts that come to life. Buitengewoon demonstrates just how much the circus is enriched when it makes room for difference. It is a celebration of talent, play, and connection, and an invitation to approach the circus in a more inclusive and human way.
On stage: Liza van Brakel, Ivar van Woenzel, Lotte Sterringa, Johan Boekhout, Sharoma Dhoen, Jasper Brückner
Liza Van Brakel
Liza van Brakel (30) is a circus artist from Rotterdam. The circus captured her heart when she was eight years old and has never let go. She enjoys manipulating objects and exploring the endless possibilities of juggling, especially when collaborating with others.
Ivar van Woenzel (25) is an acrobat and ball artist from Rotterdam. What he loves most about the circus is combining different disciplines. He particularly enjoys working closely with dance, music, and partnership, through which he tells a story to the audience using physical movement.
Lotte (28) is a circus artist from Rotterdam. At the age of 7, she started at the Rotjeknor circus, where her love for circus has continued to grow. Last year, she graduated from Codarts Circus, performing dance and spinning in a Ferris wheel.
Johan Boekhout (59) is a musician who plays the piano, accordion, and drums. He also performs at Théâtre Babel. Despite his fear of heights, he pushes his limits. Johan dreams of making music in a circus show or becoming a circus director one day.
Sharoma Dhoen (27) has been working at Théâtre Babel for six years. Hard of hearing, she loves to sing and is known for her daring. She also discovered her great passion for aerial acrobatics.
Jasper Brückner (23) has been working at Théâtre Babel for two years. He is athletic, eager to learn, and values clarity. Enthusiastic about discovering new things, such as acting and movement, he is also a fan of video games, soccer, and Marvel.
Théâtre Babel is a venue dedicated to inclusive performing arts. A space of freedom where performing arts explore and portray an inclusive society. The theater has a professional troupe that reflects the diversity of society. For talented individuals who do not (yet) have a place in arts schools, Théâtre Babel offers a program of classes. For schools, the theater offers school performances and inclusive theater workshops.
